SOetBE’17, the Special Track “Simulation and Online Experimentation in Technology Based Education” within exp.at’17, aims to provide an academic discussion forum centred around exploring the impact and effect of virtualisation, simulation and experimentation as important tools in the technology and engineering education arena, focussing on practice based computing in a face-to-face context as well as blended distance learning.

The development of simulation and virtualisation technologies, for computer technology disciplines such as Cisco Networking, Linux, Microsoft, CompTIA, VMware and much more – has encouraged the creation of realistic simulated resources and experiences. In environments that offer low cost, distributed de facto experiences for a range of student requirements, yet need to be trusted when compared to the traditional paradigm of hands-on practice using live technologies. This special track encourages an agnostic multi-vendor view, exploring the challenges and solutions for technology based simulation, virtualisation and experimentation in alternate academic contexts.

• Distance Learning Solutions and Accessible Solutions to practical problems via simulation, virtualisation or experimentation
• Success stories, adapting technology vendor content to engage learning via simulation, virtualization or experimentation
• Using alternate technologies as tools for teaching technology concepts
• Pedagogical enhancement of technology teaching via simulation, virtualisation or experimentation
• Linking unrelated learning environments
• Exploring pedagogy, andragogy and heutagogy underpinning experimentation within technology based education
• Exploiting social media as a technology focussed ‘simulation or experimentation’ tool

The Experiment@International Conference 2017 (exp.at’17), will be held at University of Algarve (Faro, Algarve, Portugal) on June 6-8, 2017, and it is a joint organization of the University of Porto and the University of Coimbra with the collaboration of the University of Algarve and with the technical support of IEEE (IEEE Industrial Electronics Society and IEEE Education Society) and the Portuguese Engineers Association.

Information and communication technologies play a fundamental role in the effort to increase interest of young people in technical education, in their engagement in the field of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). And, of course, also in the support of online experimentation. Online experimentation comprises remote and virtual experimentation complemented by other online tools based in virtual reality, augmented reality, sensorial devices, live videos, interactive videos and serious games.

OEC’17, the Special Track “Online Experimentation in Control” within exp.at’17, aims to create a forum for discussing topics related to online experimentation in control area that can be considered as the special subset of all Internet based experiments, or Internet of Things (IoT). It brings the necessity to consider the experiment in feedback structure to control the system outputs to its required values. Such types of experiments brings specific problems to solve, e.g. cooperation with simulation environments, stability of control algorithms, robustness, experiment visualisation, choice of sampling period, impact of the time delays, measurement noise, etc.

• Control and machine learning
• Control and computer vision
• Remote control and measurement technologies
• Internet based control education
• Internet of Things in control
• Mobile applications in control
• Interactive control applications
