The history of the University of Coimbra dates back to the century subsequent to the very foundation of the Portuguese nation. In 1290, Coimbra was chosen as the site of one of the oldest universities in the World. Today, this impressive university is still one of the world’s most illustrious and the city’s biggest attraction.

Entering through the 17th century “Porta Ferrea” (“Iron Gate”), one finds a courtyard known as “Patio das Escolas”. On the north side of this courtyard is the Old University buildings. This is the oldest university in Portugal, founded in Lisbon in 1290, and later moved between Lisbon and Coimbra for four times. It was settled definitively in Coimbra in 1537 by the King John III. The University stands, since the sixteen century, in a Palace where our first kings lived, this palace was originally built by Muslims in the eighth century when they ruled almost all the Iberian Peninsula.

This architectonic complex includes the St. Peter College, before the infant’s rooms and now the University principal’s offices. Via Latina, an eighteen century arcade and balcony with a central air, is the formal entrance to the University Ceremony Hall, to the University police room and to the La Examination room.

Coimbra is one of the Portuguese cities that provides the most pleasure living in, with the traditions, modern and young spirit, cultural atmosphere, sport and nautical opportunities, night life and entertainment activities.
